The Good-One Open Range

By Meathead Goldwyn

Manufacturer: The Good-One

The Good-One Smoker/Grill was founded in 1988 by father and son entrepreneurs, Ron and Larry Goodwin. In March of 2007, Ace of Hearts BBQ Specialties purchased The Good-One product line and partnered with Goodwin Industries, the manufacturer of The Good-One to expand the brand nationally. In 2013 The Good-One was bought by Landmark Manufacturing. Landmark has established a subdivision named Good-One Manufacturing to manufacture and distribute the smokers, charcoal, and flavored woods. Landmark will be manufacturing all models at their factory in Gallatin Missouri Chris Marks of The Good-One displaying his AmazingRibs.com Top Ten Trophywhere modern fabrication processes have enabled them to reduce the cost of The Good-One while improving quality! Here's champion Pitmaster, Chris Marks of The Good-One, displaying their AmazingRibs.com Top Ten Trophy.

The Good-One Open Range

Top Ten Charcoal Grill 2014The Good-One's Open Range is their most popular cooker. This cleverly designed charcoal unit uses the same concepts of an offset smoker, but it works better. There is a front firebox and grill that has two air intakes and a damper that runs the entire length of the firebox that controls smoke and heat to the smokebox. There is also an exhaust damper at the top of the smokebox. The "spinner" design of the intake and exhaust vents is very clever. The smoke and heat enter the rear of the smoke box along the entire length and circulate around the meat. The firebox is large enough to grill on or you can use it for crisping the meat and sauce over high heat after you've smoked. You can even grill and smoke at the same time. A model with adjustable charcoal grate is available for better heat control when grilling. Made from 11 and 14 gauge steel, it has two large wheels, a removable ash pan, drip pan and side trays. The Open Range could benefit from adding two more wheels and/or a handle on the right side.

Gerry Self, the very first winner of our Pitmaster Club Gold Medal Giveaways, chose The Good-One Open Range from our impressive roster of BBQ prizes. "I received the pit today and was very surprised at the QUALITY….the ease of controlling the temperature with the air intake and exhaust spinners",the good one open range stacked smoker grates Self remarked."The damper will let you select the temperature and it will hold at that temperature until you change it. The quality of the steel is superb and the workmanship is equally as good….I don't know how to express my THANK YOU!" Self loves The Open Range so much he ordered a second one to mount on a custom trailer pit he's having made.

It comes with three 332 square inch expanded metal grates: one for the grill and two that can be stacked on the smoker. It can smoke 4 Saint Louis Cut slabs on the Top smoking rack with a 4 Slab rib rack and 3 on the smoking bottom rack. Or four 7-8 LBS Butts Butts on the Top Rack and two Butts on the bottom rack butterflied. The Good-One recommends butterflying 7-8 butts for the bottom rack to aid air flow. Smaller butts can go down in hunks. Charcoal Usage for 5 Hour cook 5-7 lbs depending on the brand of charcoal and for 10 hours cook 10-12 pounds depending on charcoal brand.

GrillGrates Take Gas Grills To The Infrared Zone

Gold BBQ AwardGrillGrates(TM) amplify heat, prevent flareups, make flipping foods easier, keep small foods from committing suicide, kill hotspots, are easier to clean, flip over to make a fine griddle, and can be easily removed and moved from one grill to another. You can even throw wood chips, pellets, or sawdust between the rails and deliver a quick burst of smoke to whatever is above. Every gas grill needs them.

The Pit Barrel Cooker

pit barrel cooker bbq

The PBC has a rabid cult following for good reason. It is absolutely positively without a doubt the best bargain on a smoker in the world. Period.

This baby will cook circles around the cheap offset sideways barrel smokers in the hardware stores because temperature control is so much easier.

Gold BBQ Award

Best of all, it is only $299 delivered to your door!

Is This The Kettle Killer?

PK Grill

The PK Grill has become our favorite charcoal grill. It proves some ideas never die.

Designed in 1952, the rectangular shape is easy to set up in 2 or 3 heat zones, it can easily be used as a smoker, the cast aluminum body is indestructible, airflow is easy to manage, and there is plenty of room under the hood.

Best. Tongs. Ever.

Gold BBQ Award

Made of rugged 1/8" thick aluminum, 20" long, with four serious rivets, mine show zero signs of weakness after years of abuse. I use it on meats, hot charcoal, burning logs, and with the mechanical advantage that the scissor design creates, I can easily pick up a whole packer brisket. Click here to read more. - Meathead

Amp Up The Smoke With
Mo's Smoking Pouch

mo's bbq smoking pouch

Gold BBQ Award

Mo's Smoking Pouch is essential for gas grills. It is an envelope of mesh 304 stainless steel that holds wood chips or pellets. The airspaces in the mesh are small enough that they limit the amount of oxygen that gets in so the wood smolders. Put it on top of the cooking grate, on the burners, on the coals. It holds enough wood for about 15 minutes for short cooks, so you need to refill it or buy a second pouch for long cooks like pork shoulder and brisket. Mine has survived more than 50 cooks. I like it better than the smoker tubes. Click for more info. - Meathead
