2019-03-28 Fake Fish Labels, A Global Problem

What if that "salmon" you're eating is actually an entirely different species of fish? Oceana, a nonprofit marine conservation organization, has been studying food mislabeling and recently published a report on seafood fraud in the U.S. They found that about 20% of the 449 fish they tested were mislabeled. Researchers ordered various types of fish, lab tested them, and discovered all-too-often that the fish they received was a different species than the one they ordered. In some instances, fish marketed as "wild catches" all over America were found to be the opposite after lab testing. According to Oceana, global seafood sourcing among U.S. retailers, wholesalers, and restaurants makes this a worldwide problem. Why should we care? Oceana's senior scientist Kimberly Warner points out that not knowing what fish is on your plate can be a health risk for some consumers. Different species of fish are harvested, handled, and imported in different ways, and sometimes these processes can cause health complications. Plus, consumers often choose certain fish based on concerns over seafood sustainability. People have a right to know exactly what it is they are ordering and eating. Can we fix this problem?
