Nick Kindelsperger is a nationally acclaimed food writer with two decades of experience.

Fresh from college in 2005 he moved to New York City with little money and no job. He quickly found his muse in the city’s diverse food scene. With his roommate, he launched one of the most decorated food blogs of the time, The Paupered Chef, which cataloged how to cook cheaply at home and eat out on a budget. Over the following decade, he established himself as a respected voice in the culinary media, writing regular columns for Serious Eats, Gothamist, the Washington Post, New York Magazine, and Epicurious.

After moving to Chicago in 2008, he became the editor of Grub Street Chicago and then the founding editor of Serious Eats Chicago. He exhaustively covered the city’s neighborhood restaurants, uncovering stories and dishes that were being ignored by most food writers.

In 2016 Kindelsperger joined the Chicago Tribune. Best known for his deep dives, he catalogued many of the city’s biggest dishes, from barbecue to ramen to cheeseburgers to pizzas. In 2021, he was named one of the newspaper’s restaurant critics. He now is working with AmazingRibs.com’s Meathead on a book while he maintains a dedicated following on his personal Substack, Nick in the Loop, the most comprehensive exploration of where to eat and drink in Chicago’s Loop.
