On February 26, 2026, the Consumer Product Safety Commission recalled over 3 million Weber metal wire grill cleaning brushes. Just one month later on March 26, Nexgrill issued its own massive recall for over 10.2 million metal wire brushes. Like Weber, Nexgrill makes grill cleaning brushes without metal wire bristles, such as the Nexgrill Cool Surface Cleaning Brush reviewed here.
What’s the hazard with metal wire grill brushes?
Small metal wire bristles can detach from the brushes, posing an ingestion hazard and risk of serious internal injuries that could require surgery. We’ve been reporting on this issue for years while also stressing the importance of clean grill grates to good grilled food. Read our article on the best—and safest—grill brushes and practices here.

Why the Nexgrill Cool Surface Cleaning Brush is a safe choice
Nexgrill’s recall suggests a couple safer replacement brushes that don’t have the dangerous metal wires. I tried Nexgrill’s Large Head Cool Surface Cleaning Brush, which uses nylon bristles instead of metal and is designed to be used after the grill has cooled down. I put this grill brush to the test on the stainless-steel cooking grates of my Yoder pellet grill.

My cold, gunky grates before brushing.

And after brushing. Other than waiting until the grill was cold, using the Nexgrill Cool Surface Cleaning Brush — and the results I got from it — were similar to what I see from my metal grill brush models.

The bristles quickly became black with grease. When I finished, I tried washing them with warm soapy water, but, just like my metal models, the gunk was there to stay. No matter, they still worked fine. (Pro cleaning tip: spray the nylon bristles with a food-grade citrus degreaser, scrape the brush on a rough surface, then rinse.)
I examined the Nexgrill cleaning brush for loose bristles and found none. I tried pulling and twisting, but the bristles held firm. Overall, the brush worked well. It’s hard to know how well the nylon bristles will hold up over months of use. For now, this brush appears to be a solid replacement for the recalled models of Nexgrill metal bristle brushes.
Conclusion
We’re giving the Nexgrill Cool Surface Cleaning Brush our Gold Medal, but we have not tested them over an extended period and may adjust the review going forward.
