Masterbuilt 10L XL Electric Fryer, Boiler and Steamer Review and Rating

Masterbuilt 10L XL Turkey Fryer

Cook everything from a deep fried turkey to a seafood boil in this plug-and-play appliance

Masterbuilt’s 10L XL Electric Fryer, Boiler and Steamer is a large capacity, multi-function indoor electric cooking appliance with a stainless-steel exterior and porcelain coated interior. The 1650-watt heating element provides a temperature range of 225°F to 375°F.

The 10-liter cooking pot is said to accommodate a 20-pound turkey. Like the familiar and popular propane outdoor turkey fryers, the cooking pot may used with oil or water for frying, boiling, or steaming.

Masterbuilt 10L XL drain

Unlike most, it features a convenient drain valve for easy clean up.

Masterbuilt 10L XL dishwasher safe

Furthermore, the control panel and electric heating element pop off and many parts are dishwasher safe.

Tabletop or not?

At 18.4 inches (W) x 14.8 inches (H) x 16.5 inches (D), the Masterbuilt 10L XL looks like a large tabletop appliance, and can be used as such.

Masterbuilt 10L XL clearance

Just be sure to give it adequate clearance. Take note especially of the required headroom. Forty inches is your ceiling, which means you can’t set it on a counter top with cabinets above.

Masterbuilt 10L XL drain basket

When frying, you’ll want plenty of room to open the lid, lift the basket and let the hot oil drain.

The good news is it only weighs about 20 pounds, so stowing it away when not in use isn’t a backbreaker.

Safety

In his article on Deep Fried Turkey, Meathead writes, “Deep frying turkey is a popular cooking technique because, if done right, it is fast, yields the best crispy skin, juicy meat, and it is mucho macho. But it is also mucho dangerous. Just Google ‘deep fried turkey disaster.’ This is by far the most dangerous way to cook a turkey and ruin Thanksgiving.”

Turkey fryer disaster

Every year our nation’s fire departments respond to over a thousand fires involving turkey fryers. When even a small amount of oil escapes, gravity sends it straight down into the flaming gas burner, turning your fryer into a fireball.

With no open flame, electric fryers are considerably safer.

Masterbuilt 10L XL magnetic cord

And Masterbuilt’s magnetic, breakaway power cord adds another layer of protection. An orange power light goes on when the cable is connected to an outlet and a green light notifies when the set temp is reached. Still, some owners complain the cord disconnects easily when bumped, prolonging their cook times.

Final thoughts

The 1650 watt heating element is pretty powerful, but not even close to the heat output of a gas burner. Hence, the electric Masterbuilt 10L takes more time to reach set temp than a gasser, and then it drops significantly when large foods are added and doesn’t recover as quickly.

Be that as it may, negative online reviews are the minority. Most buyers like the ease of use, ease of clean up, and juicy turkeys with crisp skin it produces.

Butterball Turkey Fryer

In fact, a brand synonymous with turkey – Butterball – sells this model with their name on it.

Our President, Clint Cantwell, tested the Masterbuilt and said “Using it for turkey is easier than the traditional outdoor fryers. The larger size also allows you to fry larger items and/or larger quantities than more compact fryers that are usually better for smaller items like mozzarella sticks than for a large batch of fried chicken. And you are actually getting use out of it year round versus rarely, if ever, using an outdoor fryer after Thanksgiving.”

If you’re hunting for an indoor electric turkey fryer, Masterbuilt deserves a look.
