The highly accurate ThermoWorks Gravitas Kitchen Scale has a detachable display module that makes it easier to view the readout when a large bowl sits on the scale.
ThermoWorks Gravitas Kitchen Scale Features
There are two buttons on the detachable display module: power/tare and measurement units (oz/lbs or g/kg). When the power button is depressed, the display will illuminate and a three second timer will start. At the end of this interval, the scale will be ready to use.
Pressing the measurement units button will cycle through eight modes, four standard precision choices and four high resolution options. The standard modes have a precision of 1g or 0.1 oz. The high resolution modes increase the precision to 0.1g or 0.001 ounces. Accuracy is as high as +/-0.7 g or +/-0.025 oz. For you physics geeks, the scale is calibrated for gravity at 9.8010 m/s^2. Your value may differ, but the effect will be negligible. The scale measures up to 11 lbs or 5 kg, and refreshes every half second. The tare button will zero the display so you won’t have to do any mental arithmetic when adding ingredients.
If the ThermoWorks Gravitas Kitchen Scale is left alone, the backlight will go off after 15 seconds, but the numbers will still show. The display will switch to standby mode after five minutes, retaining the last measurement but not displaying the numbers. After another 15 minutes, the unit will power down completely, erasing the last measurement. Any changes in the weighed quantity or any button push will reset the timers and turn the display and backlight back on.
The display module communicates with the base unit via radio frequency in the 2.4GHz range. Range is claimed to be 65 ft (20 m). The numbers on the display will rotate if the display unit is turned upside down. The base plate is removable for cleaning. Battery life is given as 350 hours for the display and 300 hours for the base unit. The detachable display has strong magnets that will allow it to be mounted on a metal surface like a refrigerator door.
Observations
The Gravitas Kitchen Scale has that strong build quality for which ThermoWorks is known. It’s hefty and feels solid. All buttons and seams, and even the battery boxes, are sealed. The product has an IP66 rating, not quite waterproof but definitely not susceptible to splashing liquids. The scale comes with its own calibration data, and it can be recalibrated using a 1 kg weight.
ThermoWorks Gravitas Kitchen Scale Conclusion
Like most ThermoWorks products, the Gravitas is on the pricey side. For that cost, you get a high quality product that should last many years. You’ll also get a product you can trust, something of a rarity these days. I have another kitchen scale that is similar in functionality to the Gravitas, but I much prefer the latter for its build quality and solid performance. Recommended.
