The dream machine is the one that can do it all, high temperature searing and low and slow smoke roasting. The fact is that you can pretty easily adapt any grill for smoking and many smokers can grill and sear, but sadly few do both as well as the unitaskers. Both kamados and pellet burners come close, but as we explain in the articles below, we still consider them to be primarily smokers, because they do smoking very well, but when it comes to searing the perfect steak, most are handicapped. In the past few years a few manufacturers have attempted to achieve nirvana by welding together two devices, a grill and a smoker, with mixed results.
MAK took the pellet world by storm and quickly developed a reputation as a best in class producer largely due to their sophisticated "Pellet Boss" controller. MAK makes some of our favorite pellet smokers that we've ever tested and reviewed, easily winning our AmazingRibs.com Platinum Medal Award.
The kamado, ceramic, egg grill, smoker, and oven is a fast growing category with more and more choices every year. Here are reviews and ratings of them all.
Oklahoma Joe's Rider DLX Pellet Grill has some very unique and clever features: a lever that shifts from smoke to sear and the best pellet hopper clean out system we've seen. During our testing and review we found a lot to like about OKJ's Rider DLX, but some serious flaws prevent us from recommending it at this time.
The BBQube Kamado Go 275 is a portable charcoal-fired smoker/grill that will appeal to tailgaters and backyard chefs who want a dual-purpose cooker that can operate off the grid. Read our review. Kamado Go earns our AmazingRibs.com Best Value Silver Medal.
