Coleman Xtreme Wheeled 50-Quart Cooler Review

By:

Rick Browne, Ph.B.

The extensively tested Xtreme Wheeled 50-Quart Cooler is perfect for most weekend or 1-2 day cooling needs. At one-quarter the price of our other reviewed coolers, the cost-to-performance ratio is more than adequate for many needs. With no latches and only marginal hinges, this is not a sturdy cooler.

BBQ And Grilling Tool Sets, An Unnecessary Expense

By:

Meathead, AmazingRibs.com Founder And BBQ Hall of Famer

Multi-piece BBQ and grilling tool sets are an unnecessary investment filled with gear you may never use. We've all seen these cool looking cases filled with BBQ and grilling tools but don't let the looks fool you. You are much better saving some money and buying what you need ala carte.

Jaccard Blade Tenderizer Review

Don't use jaccard blade tenderizers on food that will not be cooked beyond 160ยฐF.

The Ribalyzer, Cooking Ribs In A Hurry

By:

Meathead, AmazingRibs.com Founder And BBQ Hall of Famer

This is a clever way to cook ribs in two hours on a gas grill, but if you have a few hours, you can cook them better without the Ribalyzer. Essentially the Ribalyzer is a device for smoking then steaming, resulting in very soft meat that's not quite as rich in flavor as if they had been dry roasted and zero bark.

Spot Remover Takes Care Of Food And Grill Grease Stains

By:

Meathead, AmazingRibs.com Founder And BBQ Hall of Famer

A spot remover that will remove the grease stains on almost all my shirts is something I considered to be as elusive as unicorns. So I bought a 2 ounce bottle and tried it. One drop was enough clean a shirt so well that I could not find where the stain had been originally.

Windblocker Chafing Dish Frame

By:

Rick Browne, Ph.B.

WindBlocker is a portable chafing dish frame that blocks wind while allowing some air under the food and water pans to keep the fuel lit. When used indoors, one lit Sterno is enough to keep the water pan at the desired temperature. For use outdoors in the wind, two Sterno cans will get the job done.

KettlePizza Pizza Oven Insert For Charcoal Grills

By:

Meathead, AmazingRibs.com Founder And BBQ Hall of Famer

KettlePizza is a well made stainless steel ring that sits between the lid and base of your Weber Kettle, transforming your charcoal grill into a high heat pizza oven for a fraction of the price of a real brick oven. With the insert in place, simply slide the pizza onto a pizza stone and cook via radiant heat.

Thick Enameled and Stainless Steel Bars Don’t Let Through Enough Radiant Heat

By:

Meathead, AmazingRibs.com Founder And BBQ Hall of Famer

As with cast iron, thick enameled stainless steel grill grates retain and transmit a lot of heat, making big bold grill marks: but that's not what we want. They're too thick to let through maximum radiant heat from the fire. That radiant heat is really what we're after when trying to create great grill flavor.

Grill Grates: Teflon and Non-stick Coatings

By:

Their best feature is that they clean up easily, with soap and water, and can even go through the dishwasher.

Tempered Expanded Steel: Best for Cages and Fences, Not Grills

By:

Meathead, AmazingRibs.com Founder And BBQ Hall of Famer

Here are the main strengths of tempered expanded steel grill grates: they are inexpensive and lightweight. Yes, they also make diamond shaped grill marks without having to rotate the meat, but grill marks are not the holy grail of great tasting meat. The truth is, there are better grill grates available.

Cast Iron Grill Grates: Don’t Bother

By:

Meathead, AmazingRibs.com Founder And BBQ Hall of Famer

Cast iron fry pans and griddles can become non-stick with use, so many people are under the misimpression that cast iron grill grates are also non-stick. They are not. Cast iron grill grates are more trouble than they are worth.

Chrome or Nickel Plated Wire Grates Work Well And Are Cheap to Replace

By:

Meathead, AmazingRibs.com Founder And BBQ Hall of Famer

Yes, nickel plated steel grill grates warp under extremely high heats and eventually, the plating chips off, they rust, and you've got to pitch them. But they're so cheap that replacing them is a cinch. If you have a Weber Kettle, I recommend upgrading to the hinged grates so you can easily add more coals and wood.

Thin Porcelain Enamel Coated Grates Work Reasonably Well

By:

Meathead, AmazingRibs.com Founder And BBQ Hall of Famer

A sturdy porcelain enamel coating is applied to a variety of metals of different weights. With proper care, these grill grates will work well and last for years.

GrillGrates: The Perfect Temperature Control Tool For Grills

By:

Meathead, AmazingRibs.com Founder And BBQ Hall of Famer

GrillGrates are an amazing invention featuring reversible interlocking panels that increase the grill surface temperature, reduce flare-ups, and deliver perfect sears. GrillGrates also come in a variety of shapes and sizes so that you can customize them according to the size of your gas, charcoal, or pellet grill.

Thin Stainless Steel Is Durable and Does a Great Job

By:

Meathead, AmazingRibs.com Founder And BBQ Hall of Famer

Stainless steel grill grates can be made from thin or thick rods, but I prefer the thin ones that allow more radiant heat through, especially for charcoal grills. The problem with thick rods is that they block radiant heat and make large dark grill marks.
