Enjoy The Day With Hoppin’ John And Football
New Year’s Day is one of the most celebrated holidays worldwide. Many people make New Year’s resolutions like trying to eat better or exercise more. Some just vow to finally win this year’s BBQ contest with their best brisket ever!
In America, New Year’s Day often means relaxing with family or friends while watching football games and nibbling on good food. In the southern U.S., New Year’s Day supper traditionally features Hoppin’ John, Cornbread, collards, pot likker soup, and ham or pork chops, foods meant to symbolize good luck for the year ahead. Beans, are often served as good luck for the new year. So is sauerkraut.
Of course, for Chinese Americans, New Year’s festivities take place more than a month later at the beginning of the Lunar New Year. Check out our recipes for firing up the grill on Chinese New Year here.
However you choose to celebrate, we hope the day brings a table full of tasty morsels, belly laughs, and a generous helping of good fortune for the New Year.
